Ingredients
- 2 dry yeast
- 1/2 c. warm water
- 1 Tbsp. sugar
- 1/2 c. flour
- 1/8 oz. saffron
- 1 c. water
- 9 1/2 c. flour
- 2 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 pkg. currants or raisins
- 1 tsp. nutmeg
- water to make soft dough
Directions

1Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water; add sugar and 1/2 cup flour and let rise.

2Put saffron in 1 cup water; simmer and cool to lukewarm.

3Sift flour, 2 cups sugar and salt and cut in shortening.

4Add currants and nutmeg.

5Add saffron that has been cooled.

6Add lukewarm water (at least 2 cups); let rise until double.

7Form into buns; let rise.

8All ingredients should be room temperature.

9Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes.

10Makes 2 (9 x 13-inch ) pans.
