Sausage Breakfast Strata

Ingredients

  • about 10 slices firm bread, crust removed
  • 1/2 stick (4 Tbsp.) butter, softened
  • 1 lb. bulk sausage (your preference)
  • 1 1/2 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 6 eggs, beaten
  • 2 c. half and half cream
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

    Spread bread with butter.

    Place in greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch casserole.

    Crumble sausage into skillet.

    Cook, stirring to keep it in small pieces until no longer pink.

    Lift with slotted spoon. Spread over bread.

    Sprinkle cheese over sausage.

    In bowl, combine eggs, half and half and salt.

    Mix well and pour over cheese. Cover and chill overnight.

    Preheat oven to 350°.

    Remove casserole from refrigerator at same time letting stand 15 minutes to come to room temperature.

    Bake strata, uncovered, until set, about 45 minutes.

    Let stand a few minutes before cutting into squares. Makes 8 to 12 servings.
