- 1/2 c. boiling water
- 1/2 tsp. soda
- 2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 c. 40% bran flakes
- 2 c. rolled oats (not instant)
- 1 1/4 c. sugar
- 1 1/4 c. shortening (not oleo or butter)
Directions

1Preheat oven to 425°.

2Mix and set aside water and soda to cool; mix all dry ingredients.

3Cut in shortening.

4Finally add soda mixture.

5Divide dough into thirds.

6Pat out on thinly-floured surface into a rectangular shape.

7Roll to 1/4-inch thickness.

8Cut into 2 x 3-inch rectangles, trimming edges.

9With spatula, set on cookie sheet.

10They spread.

11Barely brown the edges, no more than 8 minutes.

12They will still be light in color.

13Remove from pan immediately.

14They crisp up as they cool.

15Cookie sheet must be washed and cooled between batches or use 3 cookie sheets.
