Simple Basmati Rice

  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1 onion small
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 1/3 cups basmati rice
  • 3 water times as much
  • salt to taste
  • olive oil to taste

Directions

    Set the water to boil in a medium saucepan.

    In a separate medium saucepan, heat the olive oil and saute the garlic, onion, and bay leaf over very low heat.

    When the onion is soft, add the rice and the salt and brown the rice for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring frequently.

    Stir in a bit of the boiling water to moisten the rice, then add the remainder of the boiling water. Let it cook for about 8 minutes, stirring once or twice.

    Check to see that the rice is cooked and then drain it using a fine mesh sieve. Rinse the rice with cold water and drain it again.

    Place the rice on a serving plate and separate it with a fork.

    Serve it immediately or warm it in the oven if serving later.
