- 4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp. salt
- 4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 c. shortening
- water
- oil for frying
- cinnamon-sugar (optional)
Directions

1Sift dry ingredients together.

2Work in shortening with fingertips until mixture has the consistency of cornmeal.

3Add just enough water to hold together.

4Let rest in refrigerator for 10 minutes.

5Roll dough to thickness of 1/8 inch and cut into 1 1/2-inch squares.

6Fry in deep oil until crisp and brown, about 3 minutes on each side.

7Drain and serve hot.

8For a sweet bread, roll in cinnamon-sugar after frying.

9Makes about 6 dozen.
