- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 Tbsp. Shortening
- 1/2 cup warm water
- Cooking oil for deep-fat frying
- Honey (optional)
- Confectioners sugar (optional)
Directions

1In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt.

2Cut in shortening until mixture resembles fine crumbs.

3Gradually add water, stirring with a fork. The dough will be crumbly. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for 3 minutes or until smooth.

4Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll out into a 12 x 10 inch rectangle.

5Cut into 12 squares. In a deep-fat fryer, heat 2 inches of oil to 375 degrees. Fry sopaipillas (dough squares) for 1 to 2 minutes per side.

6Drain on paper towels. Keep hot in warm oven. Serve with honey or dust with confectioners sugar if desired.
