  • 2 2/3 c. flour, sifted
  • 1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. ground allspice
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 2 c. brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 c. dairy sour cream or 1 c. water

    Heat oven to 350°.

    Grease and flour a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan or two 9 x 1 1/2-inch layer cake pans.

    Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices together.

    Beat shortening, sugar and eggs on high speed of electric mixer about 3 minutes or until light and fluffy. Add flour mixture alternately with the sour cream at low speed, beginning and ending with flour. Scrape bowl frequently.

    Pour into prepared pans.

    Bake 35 to 40 minutes for 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan or 25 to 30 minutes for the layers or until the cake tests done.

    Make the Filling for the middle of the cake, then frost the cake with Frosting.
