  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 4 sq. chocolate
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1/2 c. boiling water

Directions

  1. 1
    Sift flour, spices, soda and salt together. Then cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add beaten eggs and chocolate; beat thoroughly. Add sifted dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately. Add boiling water. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes. Makes 3 (9-inch) layers.
