Ingredients
- 1/4 lb. bacon, diced fine
- 1 c. coarsely diced onion
- 1 c. green split peas
- 1 small bay leaf
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- pepper to taste
- 1 qt. water
- 1 2/3 c. undiluted evaporated milk
Directions

1Fry bacon in 4-quart saucepan over low heat until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

2Add onion and continue cooking over low heat, about 5 minutes; do not brown.

3Add peas, seasonings and water.

4Cover and heat to boiling.

5Continue to cook over low heat, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours until peas are completely broken up and smooth.

6Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

7Slowly add milk; reheat.

8Stir constantly to just below boiling point, about 2 minutes longer.

9Remove bay leaf.

10Serve while hot.
