Stuffed Cabbage Leaves

  • 12 large cabbage leaves
  • 3/4 lb. ground veal
  • 3/4 lb. ground beef
  • 4 Tbsp. grated onion
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1 1/2 c. cooked rice
  • 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh dill
  • 1 tsp. thyme
  • 3 c. canned tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • freshly ground black pepper

    Combine meats and saut with onion in butter until lightly browned. Add rice, dill, thyme, salt and pepper and mix well. Place cabbage leaves in boiling water for 1 minute. Drain and pat dry. Spoon meat mixture on center of leaves; fold over envelope fashion and secure with toothpicks. Place in greased shallow baking dish; pour tomato sauce over, cover and bake in a slow oven (325°) for 45 minutes. Serves 6.
