Ingredients

  • cucumbers to fill gal. jar
  • 1/3 c. salt
  • boiling water
  • 1 qt. vinegar
  • 2 tsp. pickling spice
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. mustard seed
  • 2 tsp. celery seed
  • 1 tsp. turmeric
  • 1 tsp. alum
  • 4 c. sugar

Directions

    Quarter cucumbers and place in gallon wide mouth jar; add salt, then cover with boiling water.

    Let stand overnight.

    Drain and rinse well.

    Heat vinegar, pickling spice, celery and mustard seed, turmeric, alum and 1 cup of sugar.

    When heated, pour over cucumbers.

    Next A.M., add 1 cup of sugar and mix in jar.

    Do this for a total of 4 days.

    There will be 5 cups of sugar in all.

    Do not heat after first day.
