Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 6 Tbsp. butter or margarine (cut into bits; chilled)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1/4 c. currants, raisins or chopped dates

    Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl.

    Add butter bits and rub in.

    Add currants.

    Beat egg and add milk.

    Make a well in center of flour mixture; add egg/milk mixture.

    Mix until flour is incorporated.

    Turn out on floured board.

    Roll out into a 1-inch thick circle.

    (If desired, brush with lightly beaten egg white and sprinkle with coarse sugar.)

    Cut dough into 8 to 10 triangles.

    Bake on lightly greased baking sheet 15 to 20 minutes at 350°.
