- 4 c. diced pared turnips
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
- 2 Tbsp. flour
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- 1 1/2 c. milk
- 3/4 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
- 3/4 c. fine bread crumbs (dry)
Directions

1Place turnips in boiling water.

2Add salt and sugar; cover and cook 12 minutes.

3Drain.

4In saucepan, melt butter or margarine. Blend in flour, salt and pepper; remove from heat and blend in the milk.

5Return to heat and cook, stirring, until thickened.

6Add cheese.

7In a casserole dish, layer alternately turnips and cheese sauce.

8Sprinkle with bread crumbs.

9Bake at 350° for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
