- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 c. water
- 2 c. sifted flour
- 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. flavoring
- 1 c. brown sugar
- 5 Tbsp. butter
- drained pineapple slices or other fruit
Directions

1Mix shortening, sugar, egg, water, sifted flour, baking powder, salt and flavoring as any cake batter.

2Melt in heavy skillet:

3brown sugar and butter.

4Arrange pineapple slices or other fruit in melted mixture.

5Cover with batter.

6Bake at 350° for 45 minutes or longer.

7When done, let stand 10 minutes, then turn out on baking sheet covered with waxed paper.

8(If peaches are used, add 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves.
