Waldorf-Astoria Cake

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 oz. red food coloring (1/4 c.)
  • 2 heaping Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. vinegar

    Cream sugar, shortening and eggs.

    Make a paste of food coloring (use 1 small bottle and add enough water to measure 1/4 cup of liquid) and cocoa.

    Add to creamed mixture.

    Add buttermilk alternately with sifted flour and salt. Add vanilla.

    Dissolve soda in vinegar (hold over bowl as it will foam).

    Blend mixture into cake batter.

    Pour batter into 2 greased and floured 8-inch or 9-inch cake pans and bake in a 350° oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until cake tests done.

    Cut each portion in half horizontally with heavy thread and ice.
