- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 Tbsp. cocoa
- 2 oz. red food coloring
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 1/4 c. cake flour, sifted before measuring
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. vinegar
Directions

1Cream together shortening, sugar and eggs.

2Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa.

3Add paste to creamed mixture and mix. Add buttermilk alternately with salt, flour and vanilla.

4Mix thoroughly.

5Combine soda and vinegar in a small bowl and add foaming mixture to rest of cake mixture.

6Pour into 2 greased and floured 9-inch layer cake pans.

7Bake for 30 minutes at 350°.
