Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 c. butter
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2/3 c. water
  • dash of salt
  • 2/3 c. chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. semi-sweet chocolate
  • 2/3 c. chopped walnuts (again)

Directions

    Butter a metal cookie sheet.

    Combine butter, sugar, water and salt in a heavy 1 1/2-quart saucepan.

    Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.

    Cook, without stirring, until mixture reaches 236° (soft ball stage).

    Stir in 2/3 cup walnuts.

    Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches 290°.

    Remove from heat.

    Add soda.

    Spread on cookie sheet.

    Spread to 1/4-inch thickness with a greased spatula.

    Sprinkle chips over top of toffee.

    Let soften.

    Spread evenly over surface of candy.

    Quickly sprinkle with other 2/3 cup walnuts.

    Cool several hours.
