Ingredients

  • 5 1/2 to 6 c. all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp. salt (scant)
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 c. warm water
  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 c. buttermilk

Directions

    Into a large bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, sugar, baking soda and salt.

    Add the shortening and cut in with a pastry blender.

    In a small bowl, mix the yeast with the warm water, stir until yeast is dissolved.

    Add the buttermilk.

    Pour liquid mixture into the flour mixture and mix.

    Put out onto a floured board and knead well.

    (Mixture may be kept in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.)
