- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 1/2 c. warm water
- 5 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 c. shortening (solid Crisco)
- 1 3/4 c. buttermilk
Directions

1Combine yeast and warm water in a 1-cup liquid measuring cup; let stand 5 minutes.

2Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar in a large bowl; cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture is crumbly.

3Add yeast mixture and buttermilk; stir just until dry ingredients are moistened.

4Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface.

5Knead about 10 minutes. Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness.

6Cut with a 2-inch round (or smaller) cutter.

7Place on lightly greased baking sheets.

8Bake at 400° for 10 to 12 minutes, or until lightly browned.

9Serve hot with butter, ham, honey, etc.
