14 steps

Ingredients

  • 9 -10 apples
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 2 teaspoons apple pie spice (or 1/2 tsp. each nutmeg and allspice and 1 tsp. cinnamon)

Directions

  1. 1
Peel and core the apples, then cut them into 1 inch chunks.
  2. 2
(Don't worry about making them perfectly sized).
  3. 3
Place the apples in a large, nonreactive saucepan and pour the cider over them.
  4. 4
Cover the pot and cook for about 30 minutes over low heat or until the apples are soft.
  5. 5
Cool the mixture until it is only warm to the touch.
  6. 6
Divide it into two batches and puree each in the bowl of a food processor or blender.
  7. 7
(At this point, you will have an unsweetened applesauce, which makes excellent baby food).
  8. 8
Pour all of the pureed fruit into a 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking dish, spread evenly.
  9. 9
Sprinkle with the apple pie spice, and stir well.
  10. 10
Bake in a preheated 300 degree oven for 2 to 3 hours or until your apple butter is deep brown and thick.
  11. 11
Stir the puree every 20 minutes.
  12. 12
Cool the apple butter and then scoop it into a clean jar with a sealable lid.
  13. 13
It will keep for up to 2 months in your refrigerator.
  14. 14
Spread it on toast, crackers, or sandwiches.
