- 1 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 c. whole wheat flour
- 1/4 c. currants
- 1/4 c. vegetable shortening
- 1 1/4 c. buttermilk
- 2 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 Tbsp. water
Directions

1In large bowl, combine all-purpose and whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt.

2Cut in shortening and buttermilk.

3Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead for 10 minutes.

4Shape into a 7-inch round loaf.

5Cut a cross on top of dough with a sharp knife.

6Bake at 375° in a preheated oven for 40 minutes.

7Remove from oven.

8Combine 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

9Brush top of bread with sugar syrup and bake 5 minutes longer.
