Ingredients

  • shortening, size of an egg, melted
  • 4 1/2 c. warm water, warmed not hot, heat kills yeast
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 scant Tbsp. yeast (may use 2 envelopes of dry yeast)
  • 8 - 10 c. flour

Directions

    Melt shortening in a large kettle.

    Add the warm water; add the salt, sugar and yeast.

    Beat in the flour (add extra to knead as needed).
  4. 4
    Turn on floured board and knead eight minutes.
  5. 5
    Recipe makes 15 rolls and two double loaves of bread.

    Bake at 350° oven. May use some for doughboys (fried dough).
