Ingredients

  • 2 c. soup mix
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. salt
  • 2 qt. water
  • ham hocks or ham
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 (28 oz.) can tomatoes, mashed
  • 1 lemon (juice)
  • 1 red pepper
  • 2 tsp. chili powder
  • salt
  • pepper

Directions

    Wash soup mix thoroughly.

    Drain; place in large kettle. Cover with water.

    Add salt; soak overnight.

    Drain.

    Add water and ham hocks or chopped ham.

    Bring to boil; simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

    Add onion, tomatoes, lemon, red pepper and chili powder. Salt and pepper to taste.

    Simmer 1 hour or longer.

    Serve with cornbread.
