  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 3/4 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. flour
  • 4 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 c. boiling water

    Cream sugar and shortening together well.

    Add egg.

    Beat well and add the buttermilk.

    Sift the flour, cocoa, salt and soda together and add to the mixture.

    Add vanilla and lastly add the boiling water.

    Mix well and bake at 350° until done in a greased 8-inch square pan.
