  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 fresh
  • frozen blackberries
  • a mixture of berries
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. shortening
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 tbsp. milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. grated lemon peel
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon

    Berries: In a saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, salt and cinnamon from the berry ingredients.

    Add water.

    Cook until mixture boils and thickens.

    Stir in berries and cook over low heat for 5 minutes.

    Pour into a greased 8 square baking pan.

    Set aside.

    Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl.

    Cut in shortening untilcoarse crumbs form.

    In another bowl, mix egg and milk.

    Add to flour mixture; mix to make a smooth dough.

    Knead for several minutes.

    Roll into a 12x8-inch rectangle.

    Spread with butter.

    Combine sugar, lemon peel and cinnamon; sprinkle over dough.

    Starting at a long end, roll up; seal edges.

    Place slices (still rolled up) over berry mixture.
