- 1 c. sifted flour
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/8 tsp. soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 c. brown sugar
- 1/2 c. chopped nuts
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 1/2 c. chocolate chips
- 1/3 c. butter
Directions

1When shortening is used add a tablespoon of hot water with the sugar.

2Measure sifted flour, add baking powder, soda and salt and sift again.

3Add nuts and mix well.

4Set aside.

5Melt shortening in saucepan; remove from heat.

6Add sugar and mix well.

7Cool slightly.

8Add egg and vanilla.

9Blend, then add flour mixture, a small amount at a time, mixing well after each addition. Turn into a greased 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.

10Sprinkle chips over top.

11Bake in oven at 350° for 20 minutes (do not overbake).
