- 1 c. shortening or melted margarine
- 3 c. sugar
- 3 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 3 Tbsp. baking soda
- 1 Tbsp. salt
- 2 c. boiling water
- 2 c. 100% bran (coarse)
- 5 c. flour
- 2 c. raisins or dates
- 4 eggs
- 4 c. bran flakes
- 1 qt. buttermilk or regular milk
Directions

1Pour water over 100% bran; let it stand.

2In a very large bowl, cream shortening, sugar and eggs.

3Add milk, then bran mixture.

4Stir until blended.

5Stir flour, soda and salt and add to mixture.

6Mix well.

7Add bran flakes and fold in until just moist. Add raisins or dates.

8Chill for 1 day.

9Bake at 375° for 20 minutes.

10Keeps in refrigerator for 6 weeks.
