- 1 pkg. yeast
- 1 c. warm water
- 2 Tbsp. melted shortening
- 1 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2 1/2 to 3 c. flour
- 1 slightly beaten egg
- coarse salt
Directions

1Soften yeast in warm water.

2Stir in shortening, sugar, salt and 1 1/2 cups flour.

3Beat well.

4Add enough flour to make a stiff dough.

5Beat well.

6Cover and let rise for 1 hour.

7Divide dough into four parts.

8Roll out one part on a floured surface into an 8-inch square.

9Cut into four 2-inch strips.

10Roll along 8-inch side to form sticks.

11Place on greased baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with salt (or sesame or caraway).

12Repeat with remaining dough.

13Let rise until light, 30 to 45 minutes.

14Bake at 400° for 15 to 20 minutes.

15Serve warm.
