Ingredients

  • 4 cups canned tomatoes
  • (if whole squeeze or mash)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon Durkee Charcoal Seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 3 slices white bread
  • (toasted brown and cut into small squares)

Directions

    Combine tomatoes, vegetable oil, onion, salt, pepper and seasoning.

    Cook over medium heat until mixture boils.

    While tomatoes are cooking, melt butter and add flour, mixing thoroughly.

    Add this to the tomatoe mixture.

    Cook until mixture thickens. Stir to keep from sticking.

    Add the sugar and simmer for 2 or 3 minutes.

    Mix in toasted bread pieces just before serving.
