- 5 1/2 c. water
- 2 c. dry pinto beans
- 1 1/2 c. onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/4 lb. ham or bacon
- 2 c. canned tomatoes
- 1/2 c. green pepper, chopped
- 2 tsp. chili powder
- 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
- 1/4 tsp. oregano
- salt to taste
Directions

1Boil beans in water for 2 minutes.

2Cover and remove from fire.

3Let stand for 1 hour, then return to stove.

4Add all remaining ingredients, except salt; simmer for 3 1/2 hours.

5Add salt to taste.
