  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 5 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • enough buttermilk to make a soft dough

    Sift together all dry ingredients.

    Cut in shortening until it resembles cornmeal.

    Add enough buttermilk to make a soft dough.

    Knead lightly 3 or 4 times.

    Roll out to 1/2-inch thickness on a floured board.

    Cut and place on biscuit sheet. Bake in a 450° oven for 12 to 15 minutes.

    Yields 12 large biscuits.
