  • 3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 c. flour
  • 1 c. sugar, divided
  • 3 Tbsp. + 1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa, divided
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 2/3 c. hot water
  • 1/4 c. sliced almonds (optional)
  • chilled heavy cream or milk or vanilla ice cream (for serving over pudding)

    Preheat oven to 350°.

    Melt butter; add vanilla and milk.

    Set aside.

    Mix well flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons cocoa, baking powder and salt.

    Stir in milk mixture just to blend.

    Pour into a deep, 2-quart casserole dish.

    Sprinkle evenly with remaining 1/2 cup cocoa and 1/2 cup sugar.

    Pour hot water over top.
