  • 17 medium size, red skinned apples
  • 3 c. sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 2/3 c. water
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 15 whole cloves
  • 1 to 2 tsp. red food coloring

Directions

    Boil mixture until it forms a hard crackling in water (candy thermometer reaches 300°).

    Do not stir after sugar is dissolved. Dip apples in mixture.

    Place apples on buttered plate.
