  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 c. milk

    Combine first 3 ingredients in a mixing bowl; cut in shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add cheese and milk, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface; knead 8 to 10 times. Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness; cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 450° for 12 to 14 minutes or until golden brown. Yield: 1 dozen biscuits.
