- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
- 14 slices good-quality white bread
- 4 ounces American cheese, sliced
- 4 ounces Swiss cheese, sliced
- 2 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 6 eggs
- 1/2 cup grated onion
- 1/4 cup chopped chives
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
Directions

1Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.

2Butter a four-quart baking dish.

3At the bottom of the baking dish, arrange a layer of one-half the bread.

6Combine the remaining ingredients in a mixing bowl and beat.

7Pour the mixture over the bread and cheese and let it stand for one hour at room temperature.
