Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 2 c. milk, scalded
  • 1/4 c. margarine
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 6 to 7 c. flour
  • 2 c. shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 Tbsp. instant minced onion
  • 1 Tbsp. margarine, melted

    Dissolve yeast in warm water; set aside.

    Combine milk, 1/4 cup margarine, sugar and salt in a mixing bowl; stir until butter melts.

    Cool to 105° to 115°.

    Add egg, yeast mixture and 2 cups flour; mix well.

    Stir in cheese, onion and enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.

    Turn dough out onto a well-floured surface; knead 8 to 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic.

    Shape into a ball.

    Place dough in a well-greased bowl; brush top with melted margarine.

    Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in bulk.

    Punch dough down; cover and let rest 10 minutes.
