Cherry Shortbread Cookies

Ingredients
- 1 1/4 c. flour
- 1/2 c. butter
- 1/2 c. chopped maraschino cherries, well drained
- 2 to 3 drops red food coloring (optional)
- 3 Tbsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Directions

1Stir together flour, sugar and nutmeg in a mixing bowl.

2Cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs.

3Mix in cherries and food coloring.

4Form mixture into a bowl and knead until smooth.

5Shape dough into 1 inch balls.

6Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

7Using the bottom of a glass, slightly flatten balls to 1/2 inch.

8Bake at 325° for 20 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are lightly browned.

9Remove and cool cookies on a wire rack.

10Yields 2 dozen.
