- 1 c. sifted flour
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- 1/8 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. double-acting baking powder
- 1/2 c. soft shortening
- 1/4 c. granulated sugar
- 3/4 c. brown sugar
- 1 egg, separated
- 1 1/2 tsp. water
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 c. semi-sweet chocolate pieces
Directions

1Preheat oven to 375°.

2Grease 12 x 8 x 2-inch baking dish. Sift flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder.

3Mix shortening, granulated sugar and 1/4 cup brown sugar until very light and fluffy.

4Add egg yolk, water and vanilla; mix well.

5Mix in flour mixture thoroughly.

6Pat into baking dish.

7Top with chocolate pieces.

8Next, beat egg white until stiff.

9Gradually beat in 1/2 cup brown sugar.

10Spread over chocolate.

11Bake for 25 minutes or until done.

12Cut into 32 bars while warm.
