  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar, divided
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    Dissolve soda in buttermilk; stir well, and set aside.

    Cream shortening in a large mixing bowl; gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating well. Add egg; beat well. Stir in reserved buttermilk mixture and vanilla.

    Combine flour and salt in a medium mixing bowl; gradually stir into creamed mixture. Chill dough 2 hours.

    Combine remaining 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon in a small mixing bowl. Set aside.

    Drop by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto lightly greased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with reserved sugar mixture. Bake at 375° for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheets, and cool on wire racks.
