- 2 3/4 c. flour
- 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 (7 oz.) pkg. chocolate bits
- 1 c. black walnuts (optional)
- 2/3 c. shortening
- 3 eggs
- 1 lb. brown sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 Tbsp. water
Directions

1Sift flour, baking powder and salt.

2Melt shortening (I prefer Crisco); add sugar.

3Stir and let cool slightly.

4Add eggs, one at a time, beating well.

5Add dry ingredients and water, then nuts and bits.

6Pour in greased 16 x 10-inch pan; spread evenly and bake 25 to 30 minutes at 350°.

7Do not overbake.

8Cut in bars or squares when cool.

9Makes delicious dessert if cut a little larger, topped with ice cream and chocolate sauce.
