- 2 Tbsp. shortening
- 1 lb. lean ground beef
- 1 c. onion, chopped
- 1 c. potatoes, diced
- 1 c. cabbage, shredded
- 1 c. carrots, sliced
- 1/2 c. rice
- 1 c. celery, sliced
- 2 (1 lb. each) cans tomatoes
- 4 c. water
- 1/2 tsp. basil
- 1/4 tsp. thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- salt to taste
Directions

1Melt shortening in a large kettle.

2Add meat and onion.

3Brown slowly, stirring with a fork to break up meat.

4Add remaining ingredients.

5Mix well.

6Bring to a boil.

7Cover.

8Reduce heat. Simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
