  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 3/4 c. sugar
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. orange juice in 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. orange rind
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. chopped dates
  • 1 c. nuts (pecans)

Directions

    Cream shortening and sugar; beat in 1 egg at a time. Sift flour with soda and salt. Add alternately with milk and orange juice. Add orange rind, vanilla, dates and nuts. Bake at 325° in tube pan 1 hour or until done. Put topping on cake slowly while hot.
