  • 1 1/2 c. dates, chopped
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 c. nuts, chopped fine
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 c. sifted flour

    Combine dates, boiling water and soda.

    Let cool.

    Add other ingredients and mix well.

    Grease and flour 5 (16 ounce) cans. Fill half full. Bake at 350° for 1 hour or until done.

    Keeps for weeks in the refrigerator and freezes beautifully.
