  • 1 c. whole dates
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 c. shortening (1/4 c.=1/2 stick oleo)
  • 1 c. nuts, unchopped
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. flour

Directions

    Preheat oven to 350°; grease bread or loaf pan.

    Check dates to be sure no kernels in dates; bring dates to boil in water.

    Add soda, shortening and nuts.

    Cool 5 minutes.

    Add sugar, egg and vanilla.

    Stir in flour.

    Put in bread pan and bake 1 hour.

    Serve plain or with softened cream cheese.
