- 1/2 lb. pitted dates, chopped
- 1 c. boiling water
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
Directions

1Combine dates with water; cool to room temperature.

2Cream shortening and sugar until light.

3Add vanilla and egg; beat well. Sift flour, soda and salt together; add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture, beating.

4Stir in nuts.

5Bake in greased and lightly floured 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan at 350° for about 25 to 30 minutes.
