  • 1/2 lb. pitted dates, chopped
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. chopped walnuts

    Combine dates with water; cool to room temperature.

    Cream shortening and sugar until light.

    Add vanilla and egg; beat well. Sift flour, soda and salt together; add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture, beating.

    Stir in nuts.

    Bake in greased and lightly floured 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan at 350° for about 25 to 30 minutes.
