  • 2 c. dates, cut up
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 2 c. white sugar
  • 2 tsp. shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • 4 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. vanilla

Directions

    Mix together dates, salt, baking soda and boiling water and let stand.

    Mix together remaining ingredients.

    Add date mixture to sugar-shortening mixture and mix well.

    Use 5 (Number 2) cans (don't grease); fill half full.

    Bake at 350° for one hour.
