- 1 c. dates, chopped
- 1 1/2 c. boiling water
- 1 egg
- 3/4 c. sugar
- 2 1/4 c. sifted flour
- 2 tsp. soda
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 c. chopped nuts
- 1 Tbsp. shortening, melted
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Directions

1Pour water over dates and let stand while preparing other ingredients.

2Beat egg until light, adding sugar gradually. Sift together dry ingredients; add nuts.

3Add chopped dates and flour mixture alternately to the egg mixture.

4Stir in shortening and vanilla.

5Pour into greased 10 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.

6Bake at 350° for 1 hour.
