  • 1 c. cut dates
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg

Directions

    Combine dates, boiling water and shortening.

    Cover and cool. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.

    Beat sugar and egg together and add to dates alternately with sifted dry ingredients. Add broken nuts; pour into greased loaf pan.

    Let stand 20 minutes.

    Bake in slow oven at 325° for 50 to 60 minutes.

    Turn onto cake rack to cool.

    Flavor improves after standing 24 hours.
