- 1 c. cut dates
- 1 Tbsp. shortening
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 3/4 c. sugar
- 1 c. chopped nuts
- 1 c. boiling water
- 2 c. sifted flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 egg
Directions

1Combine dates, boiling water and shortening.

2Cover and cool. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.

3Beat sugar and egg together and add to dates alternately with sifted dry ingredients. Add broken nuts; pour into greased loaf pan.

4Let stand 20 minutes.

5Bake in slow oven at 325° for 50 to 60 minutes.

6Turn onto cake rack to cool.

7Flavor improves after standing 24 hours.
