  • 1 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 1 1/2 c. cut-up dates
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. soft shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. broken nuts

Directions

    Pour boiling water over dates.

    Stir well and let cool.

    Mix together brown sugar, shortening and egg.

    Stir in dates and water.

    Sift together flour, soda and salt; stir in sugar and date mixture.

    Blend in nuts.

    Pour into well-greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.

    Let stand 20 minutes before baking.

    Bake at 350° for 50 to 60 minutes.
