Ingredients

  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 5 cups bread flour
  • 2 tsp salt

Directions

  1. 1
Whisk yeast, sugar and 2 cups warm water in a medium bowl until yeast dissolves. Cover; let stand in a warm place for about 15 mins or until mixture is frothy.
  2. 2
Sift flour and salt into a large bowl; stir in yeast mixture. Turn dough onto a floured surface; knead for 15 mins or until dough is smooth and pliable. Place dough in large oiled bowl, turning to coat in oil. Cover; let stand in a warm place for 1 hour or until dough doubles in size.
  3. 3
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Grease 2 baking pans. Knead dough on a floured surface for 1 min or until smooth. Divide into quarters; divide each quarter into 5 pieces.
  4. 4
Shape each piece of dough into a ball. Place balls, 2 inches apart, on prepared pans. Cut a small cross in top of each ball; spray lightly with no stick cooking spray. Cover loosely with plastic wrap. Let stand in a warm place for 20 mins or until dough doubles in size. (Can be refrigerated overnight at this stage. Let stand at room temperature 1 hour before baking.)
  5. 5
Bake rolls for 15 mins or until they sound hollow when tapped. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
